AI, Artificial Intelligence, for Mastering?

One of the things that needs to be addressed is how AI analyzes a song for mastering. There needs to be a set of rules to follow. I myself have not looked into the making of AI regarding mastering. For me to explain the operation of AI mastering, I cannot. So, lets look at some of the questions I have about AI mastering.

Question #1
When AI looks at your song for the first time, what is AI looking for?
Well, it may be determining the music type. Rock n Roll, Country, Pop, EDM, Folk, and so on.
Next AI may determine the instruments used in the song, guitar bass drums keys, and so on. And let’s not forget the BPM. Let’s not forget vocals.

Question #2
Can AI determine the difference between an electric guitar and acoustic guitar? How about the difference between a piano and harp. Haw about a male voice verses a female voice.

Question #3
Is AI just looking at the frequency content of a song?
Instruments have their own frequency spectrum. Having an instrument occupying is own space in the overall frequency spectrum can make the instrument stand out. This is very true with vocals.

Question #4
Can AI determine the song parts?
Does AI know the difference between the verse, chorus, bridge, and so no. Suppose the lead guitar goes off and does a short solo. How does AI handle this? A guitar solo may need to be handled different than the rest of the song. The verse or chorus may need to tweaked slightly different from one another also.

Question #5
If I submit a song for AI mastering, the same pre-mastered twice, is the results the same? If I submit the AI master again, does it come back the same or different?

Question #6
Can AI master for vinal?
I have visited many sights offering on line mastering but none have a setting for vinal. I see options of Mastering Intensity, Compressor Intensity, Equalization Intensity, Volume and Equalization. Some AI mastering sites let you upload a reference song for mastering. I wonder what combination works the best. I personally believe that there needs to be interaction with the mastering engineer and artist.

Question #7
Does AI consider mastering for an album?
I was told that the songs on an album need to flow together. Flow from one to another in a smooth manor. I do believe that they should have about the same loudness. But flow together? Who made up that rule? I think its silly. However, this is a topic for another time.

In conclusion if you like the results, stick with it. I do not have any experience with doing any on line AI mastering and I am not bashing it at all. I believe that as technology advances AI mastering its going to get better. I have many AI plugins that I use in my projects.
